New England Laborers' Cranston Public Schools (NEL/CPS) Construction Career Academy

Created
through a partnership between the New England Region of the Laborers'
International Union of North America (LIUNA), Cranston Public Schools,
and local teachers' unions, the Construction Career Academy
provides a comprehensive four-year high-school education to students
from the Cranston, Rhode Island Public School District. NEL/CPS teaches
standard topics such as math, English, and social sciences, integrated
with construction themes and topics. The school also teaches all aspects
of construction and environmental remediation. NEL/CPS graduates will be
fully prepared to enter the workforce as Construction Craft Laborer
Apprentices, providing new talent for the industry. They also will be
fully prepared to attend college, building a growing number of
professionals with a close connection to, and appreciation of, both the
Labor Movement and the construction industry.
NEL/CPS is reaching and helping "at-risk" kids, and has garnered
positive publicity for Laborers and contractors. For his leadership in
establishing the school, LIUNA General Secretary Treasurer Armand
Sabitoni was recognized as a top newsmaker by Engineering New-Record.
